International Day of the Girl, 2021, "Digital generation, Our generation" - What Parents and Government Can Do.

Every girl needs to be given a chance to develop digital skills. So, in this year's International Day of the Girl, themed, "Digital generation, Our generation,” Saving Hand Development Initiative (SHADE-IN) joins the world to advocate for the girl to be equipped with digital skills, following the global statistics of exclusion of the girl. In this part of the world, Nigeria, we often see the girl child learning more of skills like hair dressing and fashion. While these skills are good, introducing them to how they can scale these skills through digital technology would make their skills more sellable. "Charity begins at home," they say. In SHADE-IN, one of our strategic objectives is to incorporate parents into the transformation agenda of the young, which includes the girl. Hence, we call on parents to expose their girls to digital education and skills and not only the boys. Girls can learn content creation, coding, digital marketing, cyber security, social media ma

World Teachers' Day, 2021: Teachers at the Heart of Education Recovery - Our Interventions.

On this special day, we join the world to celebrate our esteemed teachers. Although it appears like you are not getting commensurate value and recognition for what you do, we must say your efforts are well appreciated. A day is not enough to celebrate you - thanks to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for figuring this out. As part of our strategies, Saving Hand Development Initiative (SHADE-IN) has a vision to improve the lives of teachers and impact positively in them to make their work more impactful and profitable. This is why SHADE-IN has embarked on several education-based projects including the "Changed Teachers Conference (CTC)." SHADE-IN believes in tailoring interventions based on needs and that is why we use the research approach in our programme design. Over the years, SHADE-IN has carried out some research in schools within Edo State and Rivers State and identified certain gaps that informed our programming. We have garnered

International Youth Day: Transforming Food Systems

👥👥👫👪👬👭👥👥 The theme of International Youth Day 2021 is, “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health.” It is so good to know that the UN and the globe recognises the critical roles of young people in contributing to transformed food systems. To achieve this, it will require innovative ideas and moves on the part of the youths. We know that youths are naturally gifted with innovation. It's either it is used negatively or positively.  In Saving Hand Development Initiative (SHADE-IN) we encourage innovations. We encourage young people to channel their innovative minds positively. More young persons need to embrace agriculture, agribusiness, farming, in order to preserve and transform our food systems. In Nigeria where local farmers are under threat of security of their lives and farms, young people should collaborate and come up with innovative ways to thrive in the agricultural business, while ensuring food security and healthy foods. Where indiv

March 1: Zero Discrimination Day - End Inequalities

It is great to know that March begins with Zero Discrimination Day. The UN under the umbrella of United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDs (UNAIDS) marks this day every 1st March. This year, 2021, the theme is "End Inequalities." Saving Hand Development Initiative (SHADE-IN) hereby calls on policy makers to ensure that all forms of discrimination and inequalities are addressed in every policy or law passed. The budget should make provision to prioritize critical sectors such as education and health. The Violence Against Persons (VAPP) act, which is one of the non-discriminatory acts should be made to extend its jurisdiction across the 36 states of the federation. With the amendment of some of the grey areas pointed out by civil society organisations, the VAPP should be fully operational across Nigeria. Every child deserves an education, yet some children cannot afford to have one because they are special children and the alternatives available for them are either few, inacce

Prioritise Education Amidst COVID-19 - International Day of Education: Recover and Revitalize Education for the COVID-19 Generation.

Words like "I just want to thank you for supporting me thus far. May God Almighty bless you... My generation would forever be grateful to you," is part of the reasons we keep at what we do in ensuring that we contribute our little quota towards educational development particularly in Nigeria. That statement is from one of our beneficiaries. About 11 years ago, among other children, he was in JSS 2 in a rural settlement in Ekiti State where we started our outreach on education.  Today, he is a 400 level civil engineering student in University of Benin (UNIBEN), sponsored by SHADE-IN. The truth is, when you educate a person, you educate a generation. When you deprive a person of education, you deprive a generation. Through our previous researches, we have identified key issues in the Nigerian educational system, using some schools in Edo State as a case study. While solving these issues has been an uphill task for the Nigerian Government, COVID-19 has posed its own challeng
