SHADE-IN is involved in educational advocacy

SHADE-IN was part of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organisations (CONGOs) team who went on a fact finding visit to one of the public secondary schools in Benin City, Edo State on 12th June, 2018.

The visit was prompted by an issue reported, of a student sitting for National Examinations Council (NECO) exam, who returned home with a blank ID card. This was a thing of concern as it poses suspicion that this process aids examination malpractice. This discovery was taken up by CONGOs being raised by a member of the Conference.

During the visit, it was discovered that the ID card issued was an initiative to cover up for the lapses of NECO, as the team was informed that the ID card was done for formality. It was observed that NECO is disorganised unlike WAEC with limitations ranging from unavailability of mark and attendance, IT aided checks, ID card, limited question papers and poor time management. Sometimes, exams started late and candidates are not allowed to stay up to the time scheduled.

The team was however informed that the means of verification the school employs is the school-owned photo album, as all candidates are students of the school.

Taking a tour to the hall, where the exam was on going, it was also observed that students had to pair because of unlimited question papers with the excuse given by the NECO officer that the number of candidates was mistaken for 18 instead of 81.

At the end of the visit, the team was assured that every abnormalities will be corrected and the ID card issue will not occur again.

However, advocacy needs to be carried out with NECO to correct identified loopholes.

Educators' Role Towards Learning For Lasting Peace - Advocate for Reviewed Education Budget Allocation.

This year's international day of education focuses on Learning for Lasting Peace with hashtag #LeadingSDG4, by emphasising the crucial role education and teachers play in countering hate speech. According to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), "Education is a human right, a public good and a public responsibility." If it is a public responsibility, then it's definitely the Government's responsibility as well. UNESCO also cited that "without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong opportunities for all, countries will not succeed in achieving gender equality and breaking the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of children, youth and adults behind. Furthermore, UNESCO stated that, "Today, 250 million children and youth are out of school, and 763 million adults are illiterate. Their right to education is being violated and it is unacceptable. It's time to transform education." For ove...
