UN 2019 Universal Children’s Day Celebration: SHADE-IN's Perspectives

Universal Children’s Day means investing in our future (children), this is why the United Nations (UN) has designated every November 20th as Universal children’s day. The celebration helps to promote togetherness around the world, awareness of the problems children face in every corner of the globe and improve the welfare for all children. The establishment of the Universal Children’s Day could be traced to 1954 where the UN General Assembly adopted the ‘Declaration of the Rights of the Child’. In 1989 the ‘Convention on the Rights of the Child’ was also adopted by the UN General Assembly. The Children’s Day marks the celebration of both events. The celebration of this  year, 2019  is special because it marks the 30 th anniversary of the ‘Convention on the Rights of the Child’ (an international agreement on childhood). It becomes the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history and has helped transform children’s lives around the world. The convention mentions a n

UN 2019 International Youth Day: SHADE-IN Participates in National Youth Dialogue on the SDGs, Speaks on Goal 4

August 12 was first designated International Youth Day by the UN General Assembly in 1999, and serves as an annual celebration of the role of young women and men as essential partners in change, and an opportunity to raise awareness of the challenges and problems facing the worlds youth. Today, we celebrate the young people, youth-led organisations, Governments and others who are working to transform education and uplift young people everywhere.  -UN Secretary-General AntĂłnio Guterres There are currently 1.8 billion young people between the ages of 10 and 24 in the world. This is the largest youth population ever. However, more than half of all children and adolescents aged 6-14 lack basic reading and Maths skills, despite the fact that the majority of them are attending school. This global learning crisis threatens to severely hamper progress towards the SDGs. This year's theme: Transforming education highlights efforts to make education more inclusive and accessib

SHADE-IN Marks 2019 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, Emerges M&E Officer of AACSGBV, Edo State

Every year, 30th July, 2019 is recognised as World Day Against Trafficking In Persons. United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) defines human trafficking as the act of recruiting, transporting, transferring, harboring or receiving a person through the use of force, deception or other means for the purpose of exploiting them. The theme of this year's celebration is "A Call To Act Now". Despite the fact that almost every country has trafficking laws, trafficking still remains a global menance. Hence, the thrust of this year's celebration is UNODC call to the Governments of Nations to " Act Now" by taking urgent, expedient and practical action with the best interests of the victims of trafficking as the primary consideration. The strong urgent message of UNODC is that whether law or services, national or community based, sustained or targeted, all responses should be: human rights based, age and gender responsive and victim centered to assi

World Water Day: Leaving No One Behind, Improving WASH Conditions in Our Public Schools

On the 22nd of March every year, the United Nations (UN) celebrates World Water Day. This year, 2019, the theme is: "Leaving No One Behind". This is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) goal 6: "Water For All by 2030". Water is a necessity of life, so much so that the body contains two-thirds water in various forms. Water is a major constituent of cells, tissues, organs and other body parts. Most of the food we eat is composed of water in varying degree, even the air we breath has some amount of moisture (water) in it. It is therefore safe to say that water is as essential as air, because water is life. Water is needed in our day to day activities, from drinking to cooking, washing, cleaning, bathing, etc. It is a stated fact that humans can survive up to seven days without food, but they cannot survive seven days without water. This article focuses on water, sanitation and hygiene as it relates to public schools. Saving Hand Development I

About Changed Teachers Conference (CTC)

Changed Teachers Conference (CTC) is a Conference of teachers geared towards raising Role Models, Mentors and Change Drivers among Teachers who will in turn effect change in their schools, community, and the education system as a whole beginning from themselves. It is a one of SHADE-IN's programmes aimed at effecting lasting transformation in schools especially Public schools in Nigeria.  It is born out of the need to implement change in the school system using the Community Health Evangelism (CHE) model, which involves the community (in this case, the school), driving her own change. The maiden edition of the Conference seeks to validate the school's result of the survey conducted by SHADE-IN in some public secondary schools in Benin City. A visit to many public secondary schools in this city will reveal the need for this programme.  The details of the programme are as follows: Theme: Change Drivers for Education Transformation Date:  29th March, 201

Free or Quality Education: Success' story

The story of 7 year old Success Adegor, which came to light recently, might likely over turn the rot in our public primary and secondary school education systems if properly handled by the public. Not much has been done by the various state governments in addressing the concerns in this sector. It is unacceptable for the government to wait for the deplorable situations in schools to come to the public domain before taking action. This is the result of poor leadership in our nation, evidenced by the fact that many government officials would rather devour the nation's treasury than act as good leaders. These leaders acquire public wealth to enrich themselves, their friends and build edifices for themselves and their unborn children. We must confront this issue from the right perspective and provide the necessary solution that will prevent any future occurrence. We must commend our teachers who are still making efforts to effect their little impact to reach a few with the litt

Education, Science and the Woman: SHADE-IN's Perspectives on Three 2019 UN Days

So, SHADE-IN joined Lift Above Poverty Organization (LAPO) on 8th March, 2019 with the rest of the world to celebrate International Women's Day at the 7th LAPO Outstanding Women Leadership Award 2019 at Edo Heritage Hotel, Benin City. With the recognition of three women in the Professional, Public Life and Business categories respectively, who stood out against all odds with over 10 years of consistency, it was a worthwhile event. There are many other likes of the awardees: Dame Professor Christiana Okojie, Mrs. Eucharia Asikaralu Okafor and Mrs. Oserhebhen Ehehiremen Sarah, who have greater potentials to be outstanding not for bad but for good. Yes, that woman may just be in that little girl or baby girl. Let's invest in the child and strike a balance on both gender - male or female. The girl child should be given care according to her uniqueness. For instance, decent toilets with running water should be provided in public places for girls. In SHADE-I

TO A FRUIT OF OUR LABOUR: RASHEED O. SANNI

Rasheed (Right) being taught by one of our volunteers, Gloria Iboroama (L), 2010 He was in JSS 2 when we started work in Aba-Ebira, Ekiti State, being one of the pioneer beneficiaries of our extra mural classes. Today, he is a Civil Engineering 200 level student of University of Benin (UNIBEN), Edo State. Rasheed in school (UNIBEN) I enjoin all of us to pray specially for him on this his birthday, as well as reach out to him. Our most sincere prayer for him is that Christ be formed in him. This is the secret of greatness in life, because Christ in us is the hope of glory. My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you, Galatians 4:19 KJV To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Colossians 1:27 KJV K
