The story of 7 year old Success Adegor, which came to light recently, might likely over turn the rot in our public primary and secondary school education systems
if properly handled by the public.
Not much has been done by the various state governments in addressing the concerns in this sector. It is unacceptable for the government to wait for the deplorable situations in schools to come to the public domain before taking action. This is the result of poor leadership in our nation, evidenced by the fact that many government officials would rather devour the nation's treasury than act as good leaders. These leaders acquire public wealth to enrich themselves, their friends and build edifices for themselves and their unborn children.
We must confront this issue from the right perspective and provide the necessary solution that will prevent any future occurrence. We must commend our teachers who are still making efforts to effect their little impact to reach a few with the little resources they can get even among themselves and with support from parents.
Education is not cheap and we can't leave it just for the teachers. The government must do the needful and provide systems to check the excesses in all government institutions.
We have witnessed the great number of out- of school students roaming the streets of our cities because school is not attractive, the environment is hostile and does not project a hope for a better future. Very few successful graduates find placement in the market place with minimal reward because our system has little or no interest in developing the people. Since the story of Success Adegor has come to limelight, I expect multinationals and well meaning Nigerians to critically look into areas they can provide support/intervention to public schools in the area of perimeter fencing, provision of laboratories, instructional materials, good classroom chairs, toilet facilities for both the teachers and especially the girl child and all that is needed to create a conducive atmosphere for learning. Let us begin to call our governments to question so that they can drift from mere activities and focus on addressing the real challenges.
Together we will win as a people. We must keep our society strong by building solid educational institutions that will create a productive system. This will replicate itself in prosperity for all, as this is the bedrock to scaling greater heights.
SHADE-IN is committed to doing her part to assist in the restoration of our public schools.
God bless The Federal Republic of Nigeria!
