The funeral service and internment of Late Vera Uwaila Omozuwa has held on Friday, 13th November, 2020.
The service which held at The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Edo Province 10 headquarters, had points of reflection. During the service, the Pastor Incharge of Region 13, Pastor Dele Balogun, announced that the RCCG is making plans to immortalise Uwaila.
It is no more news that Uwaila was a girl with enviable virtues while she was alive. Her virtues have earned her honour even in her death despite the fact that she was raped and murdered, which is enough dishonour and injustice meted by the perpetrators.
As the Redeemed Christian Church plans to immortalise Uwaila, we hope that the government, Security agencies and all concerned will ensure that justice is served and not swept under the carpet, as there are concerns of negligence, as expressed by a family member. Recall that the 22 year old Microbiology 100 level student of University of Benin (UNIBEN) was raped and murdered on 30th May, 2020.
Saving Hand Development Initiative (SHADE-IN) was represented by Bliss Ojeruse at the funeral service.
Also present were members of CSOs Coalition on Justice and Conference of Non Governmental Organisations (CONGOs). These two groups have played different roles in following up with Uwaila's case including paying a visit to the family, campaigning for justice, Advocacy for justice, etc. SHADE-IN is a member of the groups.
Notable among attendees who are also members of the two groups are two prominent advocates on gender issues in Edo State, Comrade Grace Obakina, Executive Director, Caring Heart Initiative for Advocacy and Empowerment (CHIADE) and Ufuoma Akpobi, President, Association Against Child Sexual and Gender Based Violence (AACSGBV), Edo State and Executive Director, Indomitable Youths Organisation (IYO). SHADE-IN is also a member of AACSGBV.
