March 1: Zero Discrimination Day - End Inequalities

It is great to know that March begins with Zero Discrimination Day.


The UN under the umbrella of United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDs (UNAIDS) marks this day every 1st March. This year, 2021, the theme is "End Inequalities."


Saving Hand Development Initiative (SHADE-IN) hereby calls on policy makers to ensure that all forms of discrimination and inequalities are addressed in every policy or law passed. The budget should make provision to prioritize critical sectors such as education and health. The Violence Against Persons (VAPP) act, which is one of the non-discriminatory acts should be made to extend its jurisdiction across the 36 states of the federation. With the amendment of some of the grey areas pointed out by civil society organisations, the VAPP should be fully operational across Nigeria.


Every child deserves an education, yet some children cannot afford to have one because they are special children and the alternatives available for them are either few, inaccessible or expensive. The government should look into providing more and well equipped special schools for children up to at least secondary school.


If we claim to be one Nigeria, then there should not be tribal discrimination. A particular tribe should not dominate the leadership of Nigeria. While three tribes have been designated major tribes, Nigeria must come to the point of recognising every tribe as significant and none should be relegated to the background but allowed to contest and win based on merit and not sentiments. Religious sentiments should also be done away with. 


We at SHADE-IN join UNAIDS and the rest of the world to advocate for zero discrimination in Nigeria. #EndInequalities.

Let us celebrate one of the fruits of our ministry in SHADE-IN, Rasheed Obaro Sanni. February 5, 2019 was his birthday. Rasheed (Right) being taught by one of our volunteers, Gloria Iboroama (L), 2010 He was in JSS 2 when we started work in Aba-Ebira, Ekiti State, being one of the pioneer beneficiaries of our extra mural classes. Draft Communiqué Issued at the End of the 2nd National Conference by CSO Accountability and Transparency Initiative (CATI) held on 8th-9th November, 2023 as presented by Omotunde Clement
